THIS WEEK AT ROTARY

New York State Senator Jack M. Martins to speak on June 13 Meetings

What’s going on “Upstate?”  New York State Senator Jack Martians will report when Rotarians welcome him as guest speaker on Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Garden City Hotel.  Having grown up in the Village of Mineola, Jack Martins was elected mayor of the Village in 2003.  Highly regarded, Jack led Mineola’s first ever comprehensive master plan.  He went on to be elected to the New York State Senate in 2010 representing the Seventh Senate District.   Known to work with collogues across the aisle, since his first senate session, Jack and his colleagues have been recognized as continually instituting on time fiscally responsible budgets.

Rotarians take History Bus Tour

On the beautiful spring Saturday of May 14, 2016 sixteen members of the Rotary Club of Mineola-Garden City were treated to a “Garden City History Bus Tour” throughout the Village.  The tour which covered the Village’s historic sites, points and places of interest including The Cathedral of Incarnation, St. Paul’s and the Garden City Hotel, was conducted by Garden City historian John Ellis Kordes.  The bus was generously provided by the Garden City Recreation Department.  Following the tour, the sixteen Rotarians and guests went on to enjoy a “proper English Tea” at the Garden City Hotel.

While confirmation services prevented the planned tour of the Cathedral, The Very Rev’d Michael Sniffen, Dean of the Cathedral and a Rotarian, has graciously invited fellow Rotarians to attend the Cathedral Choir’s Evensong on June 5 at 4 p.m.   A personally guided tour of the Mother Church of the Diocese of Long Island, along with a reception to include light refreshment will follow.   Reservations are required and may be made through Susan MacDonald, Club President, at (516) 643-5286.

May 23, 2016 Meeting Notes

Wherever Rotarians may travel worldwide, they are welcomed to visit one of 35,188 clubs (according to the latest statistic published in the current Rotary International June 2016 'The Rotarian" magazine).  Last week, on Monday, May 23, 2016 Nikki Smith, formerly a Garden City resident, visited from the Rotary Club of Tampa, Florida. Since Dr. Jamie Yedowitz-Freeman, originally scheduled to speak about Winthrop-University’s Urgent Care Center had a medical emergency and has rescheduled, Nikki Smith was invited to speak on the services performed by her Rotary Club.  She and Susan MacDonald, Club President exchanged Rotary club banners as seen in the photo at right.
